The Nokia N86 is like a rare, good sequel to a great summer movie. Loaded with enough technical features to give almost any smartphone user a migrain, this new addition to the N-series comes with, among other typical smartphone features, a large 8MP camera sensor, an FM transmitter, a high capacity battery (1200mah) and a beefy, 128mb RAM.

Nokia has been cramping more and more features into their smartphones ever since the introduction of the N95 two years ago. Physically, the N86 does not appear to be any more compact than the N95. But aside from the additional gimicks mentioned earlier, the N86 also has an additional internal 8GB flash memory and a digital compass to work with its MAPS application. To calibrate the compass, you will have to rotate the phone in two different axes when the MAPS application is active. The N86 has the same double-sliding form factor as the N95, but the front surface of the N86, unlike the N95, is all glass. The control buttons on the top will take a while for anyone to get used to, as other than the C (cancel) button, there is no indication as to what they do.

The N86 also uses AMOLED for its display, as compared to older N-series models, making the system more power efficient and allows users to stay unplugged for a longer time. Unfortunately, AMOLED displays can’t stay on all the time like LCD displays. Therefore, you will have to rely on the “breathing” menu button LED to tell you if there is a missed call or an SMS.

Also, for the first time (for an N-series), the USB 2.0 connector for the N86 lets you charge the phone while you’re transferring music / images / videos in or out of the phone.

Perhaps the best thing about the N86 is its sheer speed compared to earlier N-series models. Personally i don’t see the point of having a phone that can do everything, but can’t even keep up with a 70-dollar phone when it comes to doing text messaging or taking pictures. The N86, coupled with the 128MB RAM, allows it to be more responsive than earlier N-series models, so it doesn’t feel like a convoluted, heavy mass in your pocket. Other N-series models, like the N96 or the N95, are just trying too hard to do too many things at the same time without the RAM to handle all the tasks.

As I’m typing this review, I have loaded over 4000 tracks into my N86, thanks to the microSD expansion slot that accepts 16Gb cards. How I wish the phone could accept more. Thanks to the increased speed, the N86 does not slow down even when it is loaded with so many music files. My N82 and N96 refused load the tracks when i go to the user menu to select my ringtone when i loaded 4000 songs into them, but the N86 was more than happy to display all 4000 tracks plus all the midi and aac tunes preloaded in the device for me to choose as the phone’s ring tone.

This phone is a TRUE smart phone OS which means you can download apps for it such as VPN software to connect to your office network and apps such as PUTTY or RDP clients to remote control real computers at the house/office. With 3G speeds the potential is limitless.

Now for the bad. Nokia decided to use the old ARM II CPU found in the N85, 95, etc. phones but increased the clockspeed (mhz) slightly. We were looking forward to the new TI cpu which would have provided much better speeds, at the cost of battery life. They also stuck with 128mb ram with about 80mb available after boot up. I don’t know about you but after I load up all of my apps and get cranking, I eat that up. I was able to notice some slow down in the pre-build when I:
-opened up several websites w/ flash content
-ran the music player
-opened up ‘widget’ applications
-tried basic functionality

Most users will probably never do that. If you are a power user, then you probably already know about the Samsung Omnia HD which boasts of similer features, but also the new faster CPU and dedicated GFX chip which means you can play Ipod type 3d games with ease. The final point is with the potentially underpowered CPU, you will not be able to play the super high resolution videos the Samsung can play.

Finally this phone has the slower 3G speeds which don’t reach 7mbps, will you need 7mbps? Probably not. I think for 99% of users, the current 3G speeds offered by this phone are fine.

First let me start by saying that I’ve owned this phone for a month already and im VERY HAPPY with it. It feels solid in your hands id does not freeze at all, like the n96 when you fill up the memory. Before i bought this phone i owned the nokia n95 (great device) and the nokia N96(more memory but not so good) The only reason i did not give this nokia 5800 five starts its because of the camara quality which by the way is good but the n95 and n96 were better quality camaras and also video recording capabilities.

I bought Nokia 5610 about 5 months ago after I got tired of Samsung T429. I was looking for a new cell phone which had to have two best qualifications: great camera phone and great graphics. It was esential for me to be able to send high quality pictures. Also, I can’t live without playing chess and chess program I had in my old Samsung T-429 had poor graphics and used to freeze up very often while playing.

PICTURE QUALITY with this Nokia is exceptional- I took with it a picture of a local park and you couldn’t tell while viewing with Windows gallery on my pc- that the picture was taken with cell phone, not with high quality point-n-shoot camera. I like this feature also: when sending picture, if it takes too many KB’s, it allows you automatically to make it smaller. Very minor thing is- it would have been nice for Nokia to put small mirror so one could see himself/herself while taking picture.

One of my top requirements is to sync with Outlook to remind me of my meetings. The 6650 is able to sync over bluetooth to my notebook (which also has bluetooth). You just need to download the Nokia PC Suite (free). The sync seems to work for calendar, contacts, and notes for Outlook. As well as non-Outlook data: pictures, media, apps. The only negative is that sync’ing is a multi step process. You initiate it on the PC Suite software, and then from the 6650 you have to Accept the bluetooth connection request. There may be a way to streamline this process. I just haven’t played around with it enough to figure it out yet. I may get a USB data cable to use as a back-up charger. That may have a simpler sync process.

The Nokia 5310, aka “The Music Xpress”, is one nifty little phone! Sure, it’s no iPhone, but if you want something that got just about as many bells and whistles for a little less money, you want this phone.

The 5130 is available in purple, orange, red and blue (I own the purple). It’s very thin and small, but fits easily in the palm of your hand and doesn’t give the impression it’s going to fall apart if you look at it cross-eyed.
